Shakespeare cypher: MC Lars’ hip-hop poetics

If you're a cat-loving hip-hop head, every day on the Internet is probably a great day. But today even more so. Sensing a dire shortage of cat-rap videos, duo Run the Jewels released the video to "Oh My Darling (Don't Meow)," one of many feline-featuring singles on their parodic remix album "Meow the Jewels." Since Run the Jewels used cat sounds for every beat on the song, it's only fitting that furballs take center stage in the video.

Vince Staples, “Summertime ’06” review

Vince Staples has a lot to say, and he’s going to make us listen. “I hope you understand / They never taught me how to be a man / Only how to be a shooter” could be the subtitle of “Summer ’06.” It’s an unflinching, hard and unsentimental look at Staples’ world, chronicling the harsh reality of life as a Crip in north Long Beach and the success that followed with a terminally unfeeling delivery.

Kendrick Lamar at the Ogden Theatre, 10/8/12 (review)

Kendrick Lamar took the stage before a sold-out crowd at the Ogden Theatre Monday night. Opening his set with “Hiiipower,” the audience joined Lamar in rapping the chorus with loud enthusiasm, gaining momentum into “F*ck Your Ethnicity.” After “A.D.H.D.," Lamar stopped the music to lightly admonish a pretty lady for being on her phone.
