Vince Staples, “Summertime ’06” review

Vince Staples has a lot to say, and he’s going to make us listen. “I hope you understand / They never taught me how to be a man / Only how to be a shooter” could be the subtitle of “Summer ’06.” It’s an unflinching, hard and unsentimental look at Staples’ world, chronicling the harsh reality of life as a Crip in north Long Beach and the success that followed with a terminally unfeeling delivery.

Kendrick Lamar at the Ogden Theatre, 10/8/12 (review)

Kendrick Lamar took the stage before a sold-out crowd at the Ogden Theatre Monday night. Opening his set with “Hiiipower,” the audience joined Lamar in rapping the chorus with loud enthusiasm, gaining momentum into “F*ck Your Ethnicity.” After “A.D.H.D.," Lamar stopped the music to lightly admonish a pretty lady for being on her phone.

Why? came to the Gothic Theatre Wednesday armed with a slew of new songs and a six-piece live band to bring them to life. The group's vocal identity, Yoni Wolf, paraded around stage in a muscle-tee, short-shorts and boat shoes while alt-rapping about his stalker tendencies, vowels and being single at the age of 30 -- and the charged audience loved it.
