Would Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s music been possible in the ’60s or ’70s? Despite the very obvious nostalgia for vintage rock in the New Zealand/Portland, Ore., band, there are tinges of modern influences and even forward-thinking in Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s. The retro, psych rock trio returns with its sophomore album on Feb. 5, but you can stream Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “II” early via NPR.
There aren’t many bands out there that can cover the Gun Club and avoid sounding trite or phony. Japandroids – with immense energy – does it well. The band closed its most recent album, “Celebration Rock,” and a shit-hot 90-minute set with a cover of the totem, “For Love of Ivy” Sunday night at the Bluebird.
