At 85 Lee Konitz is still cool, even if his playing exceeds the confines of that tag.

As a member of Miles Davis’ cool jazz sessions in the late ‘40s that would produce the legendary album “The Birth of the Cool” in 1950, Konitz has long been considered by many jazz fans to be synonymous with the style.

Friday at the Boulder Theater, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe threw one of the funkiest dance parties of the year thus far. Though a Further show in Broomfield and fresh snow in the mountains kept the show from selling out like the last time Karl was in town, the theater was nonetheless alive with energy from start to finish.

New Orleans’ Galactic steamrolled the Ogden Theatre on Saturday, stomping through two-plus hours of swampy, fiery grooves. Galactic conjured a raging, steamy boogie, wrapping its soulful, brassy funk around Living Colour frontman Corey Glover’s pitch-perfect vocals.
