No band likes random non-religious holidays more than the Flaming Lips. They’ll give you an album in a heart on Valentine’s Day, an album in a skull on Halloween and they’ll go through ridiculous lengths to trick you on April Fools’ Day.
This year the multi-layered joke started a few days early when the Flaming Lips announced the “Dark Side of the Moon” companion album, “Flaming Side of the Moon.” Today, on April Fool’s Day, the band shared a video that revealed the album was produced by “Funny or Die.” While the album was real, and you can stream it online, it was a small piece of the band’s elaborate April Fools’ Day joke.
In the video, the Flaming Lips meet with a slimy record executive-type (played by comedian Jon Daly) who pitches all the ways the band will sell out to make money. Some of the suggestions: the Flaming Lips e-cigarettes, lip balm and our favorite of the “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” film directed by Michael Bay.
The band has also released a series of videos, which includes a trailer for “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” Fred Armisen joining the band and actual footage of the Lips recording the album (just to prove that it’s real).
