Watch: Stevie Nicks sings “Rhiannon” on “American Horror Story”By James Garcia | January 9th, 2014 | 1 Comment »
“American Horror Story” is a television series that is known to throw strange twists at its audience. The creators are really trying to out-do themselves in this season’s “Coven” storyline with a cheesy cameo from a rock star one character worships. It was an egregious call for a ratings boost for the show, but if you judge the appearance of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks on Wednesday’s episode, who sings a piano rendition of “Rhiannon” for the witches, on it’s own merit, it’s a nice callback.
You can watch her “play” the piano and sing the song in the video below. Beware: There is a spoiler or two in it, so if you’re not caught up on the story you may want to hold back.
For those of you who don’t care about the storyline, the frame of reference here is that Misty Day, played by Lily Rabe, is a witch that was inspired to hone her craft because of Nicks’ “Rhiannon,” which she played on repeat, spinning around her little shack like a little girl pretending to be a princess. The internet has even taken to referring to the character as Stevie Nicks — that’s how much they hyped this cameo from day one.
Apparently, if you’re a witch that can bring people back to life, you get to have your idol brought into your coven to play a private show for you and your unimpressed witch friends. [Spoiler alert] Emma Roberts’ character reflects the mark of narcissistic nihilism often attributed to her Twitter-obsessed generation by saying she wished Eminem had been brought in to play the piano instead of a rock icon of the ’70s, a musical goddess. No respect from youngsters these days.
“Rhiannon” was originally released on Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled album in 1975 and was voted 488 in the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone.
