Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre famously teamed up for the track “Compton” from Lamar’s lauded release “good kid, m.a.a.d. city,” and now the duo are back in the spotlight together. In a new ad for Dre’s line of Beats Pill speakers, the two are seen in a grand studio knee-deep in creating a new song. With Dre behind the boards we see and hear Kendrick in high definition rapping over a crashing beat.
The track is missing something so the two decide to call it a night and return to the song later. We get another snippet of the song, what appears to be a Dr. Dre-produced new one from Kendrick, when they return to the studio. Dre tells Kendrick, “I figured it out,” before the two say in unison, “drums!”
It’s been an incredible year for breakout star Kendrick Lamar. He churned out the most talked about verse in hip-hop with his appearance on Big Sean’s “Control,” and landed GQ’s coveted “Man of the Year” position. This ad with Dr. Dre is the first new music we’ve heard solely from Kendrick Lamar and if these very brief clips are any indication, he’s continuing the takeover.
