Flaming Lips to play 1stBank Center, two nights at Belly Up over New Year’s Eve

Perhaps it’s fair to say that the Flaming Lips has played more traditional and non-traditional venues in Colorado than any other major label band. And now comes the scoop that the freak-rock band from Oklahoma City is coming back to Colorado for a somewhat unexpected, three-night stint over New Year’s Eve.

The Lips will headline intimate Aspen rock club the Belly Up on Dec. 30-31 – continuing the Lips’ history at the compact but exclusive mountain venue and also pushing forward that ritzy room’s agenda of hosting bands that otherwise headline the significantly larger Fillmore Auditorium or 1stBank Center in Colorado (see: the National, Jane’s Addiction, Snoop Dogg, Phoenix and Weezer).

And to round out the Flaming Lips’ Colorado swing at the end of the year, the Lips have also announced a big date at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield on Dec. 29, opening for Colorado jam favorites the String Cheese Incident.

Tickets to the Flaming Lips’ Aspen shows, which also feature opener Midlake, are $165-$675. Tickets to the Lips’ opening gig for SCI are $56.50.

The Aspen shows make sense given Wayne Coyne & Co.’s history with the mountain town’s jewel of a rock club. But the Lips’ opening slot for String Cheese is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Was SCI’s Dec. 29 show (the first of three consecutive gigs at the suburban arena) not selling well? It’s common in the music industry to bolster poor-selling shows with a big, and occasionally random opener. Anybody remember when Jay Z was added to STS9’s Pepsi Center show a few years back as a last-minute opener?

Or perhaps the show is selling just fine? Perhaps Wayne is buddies with the String Cheese guys? The Lips are veterans of pretty much every jam-centric festival in the land, sure. But still their 1stBank Center show seems too random a pairing to make sense.
