UMS 2013: 10 best quick eats on South BroadwayBy Dylan Owens | July 16th, 2013 | 3 comments
If you’ve been to the Underground Music Showcase before, you’ll know it can be something of an endurance test. Or better yet, like a modern, 20-something’s version of Nickelodeon’s Super Toy Run: How many sets can you see in just four days?
But at some point during UMS 2013, which takes place Thursday-Sunday, you gotta eat. Preferably, fast. Luckily, Denver’s South Broadway is home to plenty of quick and affordable grub houses to keep your motor running. Added bonus: most of these places have cheap drinks, too. Like sodas, we mean. And beer.
Reference this handy guide if you’re looking for a great happy hour or taco between sets and your UMS success is assured. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you about the spice levels at Thai Monkey Club.

Yelp highlight: “Hello Earth. It is Sputnik…I just wanted to let all you earth hipsters know that I am the hipsteriest bar in Denver. I have good cheap drinks (including PBR), delicious food including all those delicious vegetarian foodstuffs all you hipsters crave and even occasional live DJs playing up some old-school tunes for ironic appreciation/dancing…Best of all, I am even named after an obscure Russian satellite that most people probably don’t remember.”
Hours: Tue, Sun 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m. – 1:30 a.m.
Notes: No booze.

Yelp highlight: “I’m not much of a taco connoisseur, so maybe my opinion is not really valid in this area – but the fish tacos here are super tasty. $1.99 for a delicious little morsel after a night of alcohol? Nom. They also have veggie green chili too! If I manage to pull myself away from the fish tacos, I’ll have to smother something in that. ”
3. Thai Monkey Club
Hours: Mon–Thu 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., Fri 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sat 12 p.m. – 10 p.m., Sun 12 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Notes: If you value your life, don’t ask for your meal “Thai hot.”

Address: 102 S Broadway
Yelp highlight: “I am pretty tough. I ski, I fence, I make a mean chili. I once got in a friendly wrestling match with a drunken Icelandic wrestler and won. And even I only can stand 4 out of 6 on Thai Monkey Club’s hotness scale. You’ve been warned.”
4. Gary Lee’s Motor Club & Grub
Type: American/Motorcycle Food.
Hours: Mon–Sun 11 a.m. – 2 a.m.
Notes: Serves bacon-stuffed waffles. Patio.

Address: 176 S Broadway

Yelp highlight: “I knew that Gary Lee was in the works on opening a bar and when I heard that he finally had opened his own place I decided to come on a Saturday night and it was amazing! They had a live rockabilly band, the crowd was all drunk and having a great time. It really reminded me of the good old days back before “scenesters” started showing up and shit talking everyone cause their lives were so miserable.”
5. Go Fish
Hours: Mon–Thu 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., Fri 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., Sat 12 p.m. – 11 p.m., Sun 12 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Notes: Happy Hour, Mon–Thurs 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., Fri–Sat 2p.m. – 6 p.m. “Truly the best sushi restaurant in town,” according to their website.

Yelp highlight: “Ladies and Gentlemen, this place has $4 sushi rolls that would make your mama holler (I don’t really know what that means)…All told, we walked out of Go Fish with our bellies full of delicious sushi for just a little over $20. You can’t beat that.”
