Colorado venues account for three of the best rock clubs in the country, according to a list in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.
The magazine has mountain music-haven Belly Up Aspen at 16, with Denver’s beloved Bluebird Theater ranked just below at number 14. Way up the list is Boulder’s Fox Theatre, at fourth best in the country.
Rolling Stone offers little in the way of explanation for the Fox’s top-five pick, simply stating: “The former movie house mixes modern elegance with the everybody’s-welcome warmth you’d expect from an old hippie town.” This unfortunately wasn’t the case last month when the Fox had all the warmth of a Tyler, the Creator-induced riot situation. But for the most part it’s true.
The list was compiled by of eight musicians, including Bassnectar, Spoon’s Britt Daniel and Phoenix’s Thomas Mars as well as 16 industry insiders, including managers, agents and promoters from a host of different big-name camps.
While most of the explanations were vague, Rolling Stone did describe the Belly Up as a place that brings in good acts, but charges too much for drinks to Aspen crowds who can afford it.
