Beyoncé lip-synced the National Anthem at Obama’s inauguration (video)By Allison Sylte | January 22nd, 2013 | No Comments »
According to a report from the New York Times, sources in the Marine Corps Band have confirmed that Beyoncé’s performance was lip-synced to a recording conducted from Sunday night. Beyoncé and the band were told at the last minute that the recording — rather than a live performance — would be used for the anthem, according to Marine Corps Spokeswoman Kristin duBois. This was after the band had already played a solid two-and-a-half hours of live music, the report goes on to say.
duBois told the New York Times it is standard operating procedure for the inauguration to use pre-recorded music, mainly in case inclement weather makes it impossible for musicians to stay in tune. Four years ago, Yo-Yo Ma and three other string players used backing tracks during their performance at Obama’s first inauguration because of the bitter cold.
While Beyonce relied on a backing track, TMZ is reporting that Kelly Clarkson, sang “My Country ‘Tis a Thee” without any help.
“We all know Beyonce can sing… We don’t know why she chose to use the pre-recorded track,” a rep for the Marine Corps told TMZ.
Beyoncé posted this Instagram photo of herself pre-recording the anthem on Sunday night.
