5) Railroad Earth, Jan. 18-20, Ogden Theatre, $30
Any band that takes its name from a Jack Kerouac short story has to have an appreciation for Americana and, if nothing else, good taste in literature. That’s what makes Railroad Earth such a fitting band to draw its name from Kerouac’s “October in the Railroad Earth.” Each song by the band is seeped in American folklore and the roots of bluegrass music. Woody Guthrie is alive in Railroad’s music, but in some cases the band is known to work in elements of another uniquely American tradition, jazz. It might not be doing anything to reshape the musical landscape, but Railroad’s music does harken back to familiar roots, and the band does it right.
