With a sound that would be at home in Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown,” Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s new single “So Good At Being In Trouble” might be an indication of what’s to be found on the group’s forthcoming album, “II.”
Though the weathered, looped drums and tape hiss from the group’s previous work are still there, “So Good At Being In Trouble” shifts the melodic emphasis from strings to vocals. What results is a slow, meandering tune that uses empty space to its advantage and a fairly unique indie/soul combination.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra are playing Larimer Lounge on March 18, and “II” will be released Feb. 5 on Jagjaguwar.
