2013 Oscar Nominations Best Original Song: Adele, Seth MacFarlane get nods

The Oscars’ specialty is movies, not music, which makes it almost understandable for the Academy to pick such dud music for the Best Song category every year. Look no further than last year’s awards where “Man or Muppet” from “The Muppets” won while up against one other song, “Real in Rio” from that animated “Rio” movie. Today the Academy announced the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards.

This year Adele is among the nominees for “Skyfall” from the latest Bond movie — a song that’s pretty bad for an Adele track and pretty awesome for a Bond theme. Along with her are Seth MacFarlane for “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from “Ted,” “Before My Time” from “Chasing Ice,” “Pi’s Lullaby” from “Life of Pi” and “Suddenly” from Les Misérables.

It’s a pretty uninteresting group of songs, especially when Arcade Fire, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rick Ross, Fiona Apple and the Black Keys were eligible for nominations.

The 85th Academy Awards are on Feb. 24. Be sure to check back with Reverb for news on performers and our predictions for Best Song and Best Score.
