Doldrums – “Lesser Evil” (2/25, Souterrain Transmissions)
There’s no arguing that Doldrums doesn’t sound like Animal Collective. Like them, the Canadian producer warps Afrobeat and pop into indistinct but pleasant structures and calmly harmonizes above them. But he deviates in interesting ways by way of more naturalized instrumentation and the music’s dystopian backstory in which a heroic rebel group fights back against a government-mandated dream collective. Maybe he’s lifting a little from Aldous Huxley too. Whatever.
