Darkstar – “News From Nowhere” (2/5, Warp)
Dubstep is a genre without definition, at least when you look past Skrillex & Co. Those unburdened by commercial expectations often take unpredictable directions in texture and tone, becoming more difficult to peg. That’s the case with Darkstar. Compare 2009’s breakthrough “Aidy’s Girl Is a Computer” with the group’s forthcoming full-length’s first single, “Amplified Ease,” moving from cold to warm and from artificial to natural, as defined within the context of electronic music anyway. But this potential direction can be assured when accounting the record’s strangely quiet promo videos.
