Help John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats become U.S. Poet LaureateBy Nic Turiciano | January 2nd, 2013 | No Comments »
Not all White House petitions ask that Texas secede from the Union (Hooray!), and at least one petition proposes that John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats be named U.S. Poet Laureate.
The petition’s touching argument for Darnielle states that, “For over twenty years, Mr. Darnielle has struggled on our behalf to come to terms with the base instincts of the human psyche. In literature, there is no man more worthy of recognition through the award of U.S. Poet Laureate than John Darnielle.”
At the time of writing, 3,312 individuals — including at least 41 from Colorado — believe that the 45 year-old indie pillar deserves the distinguished title.
White House petitions must gain 25,000 signatures within a month of their creation in order to be reviewed by the president. At this rate the petition, which was created on Dec. 26, is set to reach only 21,000 signatures by deadline, which means that fans of Darnielle better get with it.
