Good points. Some critics have pointed to Amsterdam as something that Denver and Boulder, for example, should try to desperately avoid becoming. But we also don’t have legalized prostitution like Amsterdam, and my understanding is that Amsterdam isn’t even as liberal as Colorado will be a year from now when it comes to marijuana.

I think the precedent has already been set, to a degree, by Amsterdam. While there are elements of a drug culture that most probably wouldn’t invite to CO, it is also one of the richest cultural centers and safest cities in Europe. Apart from the red light district, you can walk around anywhere in that city and have no idea that marijuana is legal. Additionally, the coffee shops where you can enjoy marijuana in public are generally safer places for your sons and daughters than the average Denver sports bar. If Colorado leads the way against marijuana prohibition, it will reap a lot benefits beyond the tax revenue and become a true pioneer of a burgeoning multi-billion dollar industry that is cultivated, serviced and consumed locally or domestically. Opportunities like this don’t come around very often.
