The country-tinged quartet Heartless Bastards carries on the Austin, Texas, rock ‘n’ roll tradition with an understated, timeless sound. Its sound is equal parts pop, melancholy and literate Southern rock in the vein of the Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt. Lead singer Erika Wennerstrom could go toe-to-toe with the Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard in terms of soul and shred.
