Girls lead singer Christopher Owens quits band via Twitter

We said that we loved you, honey, we knew it from the very start.

Christopher Owens is leaving his beloved indie-rock band Girls, according to a series of tweets from his personal account this morning.

The news will likely come as a shock to fans and critics alike — the latter of whom widely hailed the band’s 2011 release, “Father, Son, Holy Ghost,” as one of the best records of the year.

Things have been up and down for Owens since Girls first broke with 2009′s “Album.” Owens has publicly battled drug addiction throughout the duration of his band’s popularity, as reflected in his lonesome, weary songs that were all at once painful and uplifting.

Most recently, Owens briefly accused the HBO series “Girls” of lifting its name from his band, then later went on to license one of his songs for an episode of the show.

Girls last played the Gothic Theatre in March 2012 in a show that Reverb writer Marc Hobelman described as “enthralling,” writing “With no banter and no antics, Girls filled the whole show with nothing but inviting rock.”

Owens did not specify if the band will continue in his absence.
