Jeff Mangum is, of course, one of the forefathers of college rock, partly rising from the same Athens, Ga., music scene that spawned the likes of R.E.M., Of Montreal and Drive-By Truckers. Mangum, lead singer of the heralded ’90s group Neutral Milk Hotel, also spent time in Denver with Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo fame during the foregone days of the Elephant 6 collective. Mangum will play a solo show at the Ogden Theatre on Thursday with members of Elf Power and the Gerbils in tow. Tickets, $33.50-$36, are available through axs.com. Give a listen to “Two-Headed Boy” below from Neutral Milk Hotel’s 1998 classic “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.”

How can you say that Mangum is “of course” one of the forefathers of college rock?  I’m as big a Mangum fan as any, but saying he’s in the same category as REM when NMH’s first release was a good 13 years after theirs is a bit silly.
That’d be equivalent to lumping REM in with Led Zeppelin to my way of thinking.
