The Colorado Symphony Orchestra gets around. The group recently backed up DeVotchKa and Phish frontman Trey Anastasio. Before that they played with Sarah McLaughlan, the Airborne Toxic Event, Brandi Carlile and others.

On Thursday, rock band Guster — with frontman Adam Gardner, guitarist Ryan Miller, bassist Luke Reynolds and drummer Brian Rosenworcel — played with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Boettcher Concert Hall. The performance was a crowd-pleaser: The show got two standing ovations before the first intermission.

At times, though, the sharpness of the acoustic drums and the fullness of a high-energy rock band seemed to drown out the orchestra’s sound. But without a doubt, the orchestra’s presence added a richness and edge to Guster’s songs that made it seem like they should try it again.
