Pop & Circumstance: Performance highlights and photos from Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2011By Allison Berger | November 30th, 2011 | 1 Comment »
Tuesday night’s hour-long Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show gave us a few tenderhearted peeks into the behind-the-stage scene’s of a model’s life, in addition to bright and flashy in-your-face performances from four of today’s hottest pop stars.
The show, which started off with a self-deprecating montage of ballet, butterflies and broken shoes to the Pretty Reckless song, “Make Me Wanna Die,” was a blaringly obvious message to home viewers not to try this at home. “I’ll never be good enough/You make me wanna die” was the lyric that kept haunting me after that first commercial break. We get it, VS, thanks.
The first performance of the evening came from Kanye West, who told the audience from a set of Rocky-esque steps that, “In 2007 I was supposed to perform this song on this show, and I lost my superhero. Now she is my super angel.” A “Stronger” man, indeed. The Victoria’s Secret Angels came out onto the catwalk, Adriana Lima leading the way, showing off their sassy superhero wings and capes, one faster and stronger than the next. The costumes during this performances looked freaky-deaky and supernatural, seriously clashing with the Versace for H&M neon leopard print bomber jacket Kanye was sporting.
Maroon 5 was next for the “Aquatic Angels” segment, which started off with a simple backdrop for Adam Levine, who also kept it basic in a plain grey tank top. There was a quick flash over the audience — is that Will Schuester from “Glee” I see? Oh wait, that’s Orlando Bloom, baby daddy to Angel Miranda Kerr. My mistake — I haven’t seen him since his Legolas days. Levine sang his most recent radio hit, “Moves Like Jagger,” and held hands with Angel Anne Vyalitsyna, swinging together down the catwalk. I thought this was an extraordinarily ballsy move, until Twitter told me the two were dating. A peck on the cheek from Vyalitsyna in slo-mo came next, and the cameras took us backstage to show the girls singing and dancing in their under-the-sea undergarments. (Where was Levine’s duet partner, Christina Aguilera? While I have my own snarky suspicions as to why she wasn’t there, I’d love to hear yours).
The catwalk sparkled with diamond-like glitter as Jay-Z and Kanye came out to perform “N*ggas in Paris.” A beautiful Beyonce beamed on the sidelines, all aglow with that baby in her belly. Alessandra Ambrosio awkwardly did some “bringing down the house” dance moves backstage. There were no models strutting their stuff during this performance.
Finally, pink-wigged Nicki Minaj brought out the wonderfully overplayed “Super Bass” for Club Pink, which had the VS Angels in fun, friendly, teenage-looking get ups. Glittery cropped hoodies, neon everything and even a bright green Pink label puppy purse haphazardly made its way down the catwalk. The most fun performance of the night by far, Minaj had an entourage of dancers that looked like a sweet laxer swat team.
The Angels and performers gathered on stage, hugged and kissed to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (anyone else see the irony in this, especially compared to the opening number?) like it was the end of “SNL” before we could even process how incredible new mamas Miranda Kerr and Doutzen Kroes (swoon) actually looked. Was it all a dream?
