Don’t Push Play: Sonny on the funny stuffBy Sam DeLeo | June 9th, 2011 | 3 comments
Don’t Push Play is Reverb’s new weekly peek at the wild world of music-themed (ish) videos. We lean toward the bizarre, the weird, the stupid. Actually, we lean hard toward the stupid. OK, get ready to waste five minutes in your cube.
Before he combed his Moe-Howard-haircut back, was elected to the U.S. Congress and had the Copyright Term Extension named after him, we knew Sonny Bono as one half of the lovable duo, “Sonny & Cher.” The two had their own TV show in the early ‘70s, not long after he recorded this PSA warning against marijuana use.
Over 30 years after “Reefer Madness,” Sonny tackles pot’s pitfalls here in song, words and golden silk pajamas. But his sleepy expression, slowed speech and half-lidded eyes couldn’t help but make us wonder if he might have been…nah, probably just a couple of Valium.
Denver-based writer Sam DeLeo is a published poet, has seen two of his plays produced and is currently finishing his second novel.
