Pop & Circumstance: A Valentine’s Day playlist for every emotionBy Allison Berger | February 2nd, 2011 | 3 comments
Love is a complicated thing, no doubt. It is a battlefield, after all. In times of relationship trouble, we turn to Kelly Clarkson. In times of lonesome despair, we turn to Pink. In times of complete and utter best-sex-ever joy, we turn to Justin.
Valentine’s Day is rearing its ugly head, and whether you’re content being single or feeling trapped in a never-ending breakup, P&C is here to provide you with some tunes for the ride. We hope they give you a good popgasm, way better than your ex ever could.
1. Katy Perry, “Teenage Dream”
When to rock it: In the basement of your best friend’s V-Day party.
What will happen: Everyone, no matter the age or gender, will break into song, kinda like “High School Musical.”
Will remind you of: Fist-pumping in the car with your first real significant other.
Emotional state: Nostalgia for a simpler time.
2. Robyn, “Hang With Me”
When to rock it: Towards the end of your justified two-week wallowing period following a breakup.
What will happen: You’ll cry, for the last time (you promise).
Will remind you of: The one that got away.
Emotional state: Ugh, regret.
3. Taylor Swift, “You Belong With Me”
When to rock it: At the bar with all your favorite girls.
What will happen: People will roll their eyes; you won’t give a shit.
Will remind you of: Being unable to figure out why he didn’t like you back
Emotional state: Jealous bitch.
4. Rihanna feat. Drake, “Say My Name”
When to rock it: In the bedroom after the V-Day date, chock-full of sexual tension.
What will happen: You’ll figure out the square root of 69, and some other stuff.
Will remind you of: That girl or guy you slept with Valentine’s Day 2011, and that’s pretty much it.
Emotional state: Fleeting romance.
5. Ellie Goulding, “Guns and Horses”
When to rock it: Commuting to work or class — whichever part of your day needs some contemplative soundtrack.
What will happen: You’ll realize you’ll do anything to get the one you want.
Will remind you of: The days you tried to give it your all, but it wasn’t enough
Emotional state: Unrecognizable passion.
6. Nicki Minaj feat. Drake, “Moment 4 Life”
When to rock it: Before a “serious talk” with a significant other.
What will happen: Your fairy godmother will show up for a pep talk, and you’ll decide that this guy is the one.
Will remind you of: The best times of your life, duh.
Emotional state: Pure, unadulterated sap.
