DeVotchKa premieres new single
DeVotchKa helped Governor Hickenlooper celebrate his victorious campaign by performing at his inaugural party with OneRepublic last week. Reverb was there to catch the action, and Devotchka fans have been given a sample of the forthcoming album, “100 Lovers,” out March 1 via Anti. The lead single is a bit poppy by DeVotchKa standards, but we’re going to run with it. The accompanying video to the single below will premier on the new LED billboard on the side of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House next Friday.
Hot Congress Fest 2011
Who says you can’t have a music festival in the middle of January? Local record label Hot Congress has corralled some heavy hitters from its roster to play a mini fest at the Gothic Theatre tonight. Reverb had a chance to catch up with Hot Congress ring leader Lucas Johannes and Fingers of the Sun bassist Suzi Allegra about all things Hot Congress.
Talk to us about Hot Congress Fest 2011 and what kind of aesthetic you guys are trying to achieve?
Allegra: “The Gothic asked if Fingers of the Sun would like to book a show with some other Hot Congress bands, and it sort of took off from there. Along with a few H.C. bands, I wanted to get a couple of acts on the bill that weren’t necessarily involved with the collective. I’m really excited about the line-up: Fingers of the Sun, Kissing Party, Lil’ Slugger, Night of Joy and Thee Goochi Boiz. I’m not sure that we were originally trying to achieve any specific
aesthetic for the night, although I think it will showcase a somewhat eclectic variety of bands who I feel are a little bit under the radar. Each of these bands put on super fun and energetic shows and often play in much different settings from the Gothic. I’m looking forward to us taking it over and spreading the word about Hot Congress.”
What kind of new additions to the Hot Congress roster can we expect in 2011?
Johannes: “We don’t have anything or anyone specific in mind at this point in time, though undoubtedly we’d love to keep expanding. There are several new releases from our current roster due in the next few months (Hindershot, Fingers of the Sun, Lil’ Slugger, The Don’ts and Be Carefuls, Achille Lauro, Sun Red and Vitamins) so most of our focus will be on those. We’ve also begun work on another compilation, which should hopefully be released next month along with a website redesign.”
What kind of presence will Hot Congress have in Austin for SXSW 2011?
Johannes: “For this year we don’t have any plans to head down as a group. There are a few individual bands working on getting some shows, but so far nothing has developed. It’s definitely something we’re going to focus on for 2012.”

Tjutjuna’s side project Samurai Buck garners Altered Zones love
Tjutjuna guitarist Brian Marcus has been moonlighting as psych-hop act Samurai Buck. The self-released, self-titled EP hit the Interwebs in August of last year without much noise, however, blogging collective Altered Zones has taken notice. Good news for fans is that you can download the EP in it’s entirety here. (Pic via MySpace)
Snow Down 2011
SIA (SnowSports Industries America) week is about to descend on Denver, and along with the trade show comes the promise of lavish parties. Z-Trip will be holding it down at the cavernous City Hall next Thursday, Jan. 27, with an undisclosed special guest. You can purchase tickets here.
