Photo essay: The Church @ the Gothic Theatre

The Church turned the Gothic Theatre into their temple on Thursday. Photos by Michael McGrath.

Australian art-rockers the Church had moments both brilliant and boring in their set on Thursday night at the Gothic Theatre. The strongest elements of the set were guitar rockers led by multi-instrumentalist and Rickenbacker aficionado Marty Willson-Piper. Lead singer Steve Kilbey bantered with the Gothic crowd and crooned Church classics like “Under the Milky Way” and “Reptile.”

Newer Church songs from their recent album, Untitled #23, held less appeal and tended to wander in drowsy, jazz-jam territory. Overall, though, the set had enough jangly guitars and poetic lyricism to leave their audience satisfied. Michael McGrath
