Raphael Saadiq @ the Bluebird Theater

Raphael Saadiq doesn’t care what year it is — he’s going to get your ass shaking like it’s 1970. Photos by Lindsay McWilliams.
He was a member of ’80s R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! His real name is Charlie Ray Wiggins. He’s collaborated with everyone from Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige and the Isley Brothers to the Roots, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder. But Tuesday night, the Bluebird Theater belonged solely to Raphael Saadiq, the nu-schooler with the wicked old-school sound.
Think ’60s and ’70s grooves, Motown vocals and classic showmanship. “Made me wish I could’ve been a part of the old Motown days,” said Reverb contributing photographer Lindsay McWilliams, who stopped by the Bluebird. “This was the best looking crowd I’ve seen in a while, and the best dancing for that matter. An awesome show.”
