Gravy Train!!!! @ the Hi-Dive

Hunx, Chunx, Funx and Junx of Gravy Train!!!! blurred the boundaries between music and PG-13 porn at their Hi-Dive set on Wednesday.

Making a crowd physically uncomfortable is Gravy Train’s specialty. Although at this point in their career, most GT!!!! fans are long-time die-hards, failing to be shocked by stage talk of tampons as tea bags, ghost boobs or sexual rendezvous’ involving beavers. This doesn’t mean Gravy Train!!!! won’t try to push your envelope anyway.

While I missed the opening acts Triangle Forest and Denver’s own Pseudo Dates at the Hi-Dive on Wednesday, I did catch a bit of DJ Alejandro’s in-between set. The kid has an enviable music taste, and was a good choice for the Gravy Train!!!! crowd. I admire anyone under the age of 25 who owns an ESG record, and who always has his audience’s taste in mind. This crowd was Le Tigre-minded, and Alejandro played just that.

Unfortunately the performance art that followed Alejandro was absolutely horrific. The PA was terribly loud, so anything the dragsters said into the mic was inaudible, and the exaggerated hand gestures and clothing removal happening on stage was more confusion than performance.

Luckily the horror was cut short, and as a makeshift paperboard curtain was removed, Gravy Train’s Chunx, Hunx, Junx and Funx stood at the synth together wailing like an old-fashioned family sing-along. In his trademark underwear and Horn Rims ensemble, main exhibitionist Junx cheerleader-kicked his way center stage and GT!!!! Began with “All The Sweet Stuff.”

Humping through “Hella Nervous,” Gravy Train’s biggest “hit” to date, the audience went ballistic, singing along and squealing in delight as the band groped each other and simulated all kinds of activities not fit for a family publication. Heavy on raunchiness, GT audiences have come to expect a considerable amount of sweaty girl-on-girl/boy-on-boy action at their shows, and the band faithfully delivered.

Junx belted out the off-key gem, “Call Me in French,” shaking his booty while Hunx seductively pulled his spandex pants down and flashed the audience his skivvies. Donning blow-up doll expressions, the ladies, Chunx and Funx, took turns bending each other over during “Strip 4 Me” and the hilarious story-song, “Frat Party.” Due to age and time constraints, the show ended quickly around 11 p.m., and Gravy Train left the stage without the option an encore.

Predictability is a good thing when it comes to Gravy Train. Playing out like a live PG-13 porno flick cast by John Waters, Wednesday night’s show was an hour-long set of pure horny teenage perfection. Underwear flashing, excessive groping, and unimaginable displays of sexual activity highlighted an evening of wonderful inappropriateness.

It was a regular evening with Gravy Train!!!! What did you expect?
