Little Dragon at the Ogden Theatre in Denver (review) |Check It >>

Little Dragon managed to turn the cavernous vibe of the Ogden Theatre into a pulsating euro disco with thundering bass that occasionally obscured Yukimi Nagano’s vocals. “We wanted to have one of our best shows of the last couple of years,” said Eddie Vedder during Pearl Jam‘s second encore at the Pepsi Center Wednesday night. “Thanks for the opportunity.”

Pearl Jam achieved that, and more. Wednesday night marked the 24th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s first ever gig, and the band was determined to make it memorable. When Vedder talked about the anniversary, he also explained that guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament have been playing together for the 30 years, and thanked them for being the nucleus around which he, guitarist Mike McCready, drummer Matt Cameron, and keyboard player Boom Gaspar have formed one of rock’s best bands.

For all the talk of our ever-shrinking world, Greg Dulli still manages to make it seem exotic.

The Hamilton, Ohio, native splits his time between homes in Los Angeles and New Orleans, and as the leader of swaggering alt-rock demons the Afghan Whigs, he prowls the planet plying his dark, soulful trade in dozens of different countries.

“There’s physical environment and then there’s emotional environment, and you know your emotions don’t really take notice of map lines or borders or states,” said Dulli, 49, who brings the Afghan Whigs to the Bluebird Theater on Oct. 29. “That said, I could go through my songs and remember where I did this or that and be able to make the correlation between where I was and who I was.”

For music fans and emerging bands alike, CMJ is the most wonderful time of the year. For five days, New York City becomes a music fan’s playground with more than 1,000 bands spread out over Manhattan and Brooklyn. This is our Iron Man. Our Olympics. This is what we have been training for our entire lives, and now it is finally here. However, a festival this big can be a little overwhelming, so two Reverb writers decided to take it upon themselves and pick 10 bands that you definitely need to check out if you are attending this year’s marathon. You will no doubt see more than 10 bands over the next five days, but this is a good place to start.
