On April 6, DJ Cavem will join an event at the White House that celebrates five years of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” health initiative by performing his Culinary Concert program alongside his wife, Alkemia Earth, chef Bobby Flay, “Sesame Street’s” Big Bird and The First Lady herself.
The despair some feel amid Denver’s sharp rise in gang violence, which over the past three months has been blamed for multiple shootings and homicides in neighborhoods like Five Points, Whittier, Park Hill and Montbello, is palpable.
“What if a bullet misses and hits someone’s home?” Park Hill resident Jennifer Chelwick recently told The Denver Post. “Or hits one of their pets? Or hits one of them?”
“There has been a bit of a trend lately with the younger kids being involved in the violent activity,” said Cmdr. Mark Fleecs, who oversees the Denver Police division that includes the gang bureau, in another Post article.

From paintings, to plays and poetry, artists have long worked to tackle the issue of immigration creatively. For Shawn King (DevotchKa’s drummer) and Raul Pacheco (Ozomatli’s guitarist), the duo is working through the topic of immigration using a mix of real life experiences and their own music.
The two have have teamed up to create Los Dreamers, a supergroup that has yielded their self titled album as a social commentary as a group of immigrant stories from some of the best voices from the Americas that are simpatico with the cause to bring immigration awareness to the masses. It’s important to point out that the term “dreamers” derives from undocumented children brought to the US at a very young age and stuck in a residential purgatory.

The indie-rock night co-founded by Michael Trundle finds itself moving to its fourth home — on South Broadway — bouncing between neighborhoods with rapidly changing identities.
