John McLaughlin proves jazz master at the Boulder Theater | Reverb — Reverb Music — The Denver Post

Photo essay: John McLaughlin @ the Boulder Theater

When one thinks of John McLaughlin, several amazing parts of musical history come to mind: Shakti, MIles Davis, the guitar trio with Al Dimeola and Paco de Lucia and Mahavishnu Orchestra, just to name a few.

Throughout the years, McLaughlin has cemented his reputation as one of jazz’s most virtuosic guitarists. His musical mastery again shone through Saturday night at the Boulder Theater, where he and his band, the 4th Dimension, kept the large crowd mesmerized. The quartet, consisting of McLaughlin on guitar, bassist Etienne M’bappe, drummer Mark Mondesir and multi-instrumentalist Gary Husband on keyboards and drums, shredded any notion that jazz is dead, playing with a syncopated ferocity.

It was a night which will hopefully be repeated, but could never be recreated.
