Steal This Track: Dualistics and Married in Berdichev
By eryc eyl | June 22nd, 2010 | 1 Comment »It’s Tuesday again, and that means it’s time to warm up your right-clicking fingers and start downloading some of Colorado’s best music on Steal This Track.
This week, we bring you two not-yet-released tracks from upcoming albums. We’ll ease you into it with the powerful, head-bobbing pop of Dualistics, and then take you out to a picturesque left field with Married in Berdichev‘s ethereal melancholia. Both songs come from albums that will be released just in time for the 10th annual Underground Music Showcase.
As the band’s name suggests, Dualistics continually strive to maintain balance among disparate influences, styles and sounds. A love for progressive rock is balanced by nostalgic passion for “Alternative Nation” ’90s rock. Folky rock that would find itself at home on the next KBCO compilation is disrupted delightfully by screams, teen angst and, oh, those guitars!
Thanks to the instrumental prowess of drummer Nate Barnes, bassist Jimmy Stofer (who can also be found at the bottom end of Hello Kavita and Rose Hill Drive), lead guitarist/singer/songwriter Tyler Despres (also of Science Partner) and rhythm guitarists/singer/songwriter Charley Hine, the juxtapositions succeed.
Dualistics recorded their latest release in Despres and Hine’s apartment in the building that houses the Meadowlark Bar. Hine points out that the first floor of the building was once a pharmacy, so their floor “used to house tons of drugs.” The band was able to take advantage of the building’s tall warehouse ceilings to obtain a spacious, open sound. The new record will be made available a week before The UMS at a CD release show on July 17 at the Hi-Dive, but you can grab a sneak preview of “Only Way to Stay,” one of its catchy-as-chlamydia tracks, right here.

Married in Berdichev wrestles with its share of dualities as well. The brainchild and lovechild of Brittany Gould, a prominent member of Denver’s experimental music scene, Married in Berdichev’s music blends post-millennial tension and dreamy detachment into an ethereal melange that is at once calming and disquieting.
Gould once fronted the chaotically cathartic Mannequin Makeout, and now collaborates cross-country with Eva Aguila in the atmospheric Caldera Lakes. She also occasionally collaborates on beautiful singer-songwriter fare with her beau, Jason Cain of Astrophagus (check out a track they recorded together here).
Fans of Dead Can Dance and Jarboe will find much to like on Married in Berdichev’s upcoming album, “Readying.” Its songs simmer and steam with a mixture of Zen-like peace and dark dread. Lush chords brew and build slowly while Gould patiently and painstakingly unfolds her stories of love and longing, interrupted and distracted occasionally by electronic bleeps and burbles. “Readying” will be released by Bocumast Records on July 20, just before The UMS kicks into high gear. You don’t have to wait until then to hear it though. Steal “I Need the Sun” right now for a taste of good things to come.
