Danny Shafer opened up Saturday night at the Boulder Theater, whetting the crowd’s appetite with his song “BBQ.” North Carolina’s Steep Canyon Rangers followed with their brand of melodic newgrass and soulful harmonies steeped in gospel roots, which gave way to intricate jams filled with instrumental prowess. The crowd, seemingly awestruck, shifted from all-out dancing to silent admiration, giving more power to the music. Nederland’s own Great American Taxi tore right into their second CD release party in as many years, veering from “Appalachian Soul,” to reminding us of our “Reckless Habits.” – Joshua Elioseff
