Live review: Theory of a Deadman @ the Ogden Theatre

[insertReverbPhoto id="93843" photo="16"]
Last week’s Theory of a Deadman show was half boozy party, half celebration of hard-rock ancestry. Photo by Jennifer Cohen.
It may have been a Wednesday at the the Ogden Theatre, but it was undeniable that every night is a Saturday night in rock ‘n roll. Set against a backdrop of booming speakers was the heavy drinking, fist pumping, girls doing shots with the opening bands at the upstairs bar and that curious smoke smell that rises from the center pit. It meant only [...]

The Reverb Interview: Venus Cruz

Local songbird Venus Cruz is saying “You’re welcome” to all the folks lucky/smart enough to bring their significant others to the Soiled Dove tonight for some Sade-tinged Valentine’s goodness.
Sade’s music is both enigmatic and plainspoken. The revered vocalist is known and loved for her ethereal vocals and smooth jams, including the hits “Smooth Operator,” “Sweetest Taboo” and “No Ordinary Love,” that have made her one of England’s top-selling female artists.
Sade’s sixth record in 26 years, “Soldier of Love,” was released earlier this week, fittingly tied [...]

Flobots, the Denver hip-hop/rock act who represent a sort of conscious, politically aware opposite to 3OH!3’s mindless party grooves, will celebrate the release of its new Universal Republic CD “Survival Story” on March 12 at the Ogden Theatre. The band, who recently won the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, is already streaming the catchy, tight single “White Flag Warrior” (featuring Tim McIlrath of Rise Against) [...]

Live review: The Entrance Band @ the Hi-Dive

Live review: The Entrance Band @ the Hi-Dive

Black-lit evenings don’t always have to be shrill, garish affairs, as the Entrance Band proved Monday at the Hi-Dive. Photo by Sasha Eisenman.
At the Hi-Dive on Monday evening, a gentleman in a white fur hat stepped onstage. He pressed a few buttons, wiggled some hardware, and hid his collection of whiskey shots somewhere behind the amps. He then quietly excused himself as an electric hum swelled to the ceiling. Two concertgoers, fresh from the cold, craned their necks as they approached the stage. Seeing nothing, [...]

Sade, “Soldier of Love” (Sony)
It’s been a decade since the last full-length Sade album, a long wait for fans of those lush rhythms and melancholy vocals that come together to create the signature sound of the singer born Helen Folasade Adu 51 years ago. And to be honest, not all that much has changed.

Live review: Béla Fleck's "Africa Project" @ the Boulder Theater

[insertReverbPhoto id="93217" photo="9"]
Béla Fleck curated — and performed at — a stunning showcase of traditional and contemporary African music at the Boulder Theater last night. Photo by Nathan Rist.
Béla Fleck has mastered all sounds on his banjo. The other-worldly maestro can meld his twangy instrument with virtually every genre of music. So it makes perfect sense that the perpetually innovative master of the American banjo would eventually wander into Africa, where that percussive lute was born more than 2,000 years ago.
