Steal This Track: Orange peel moses

It’s that time of the week again. Every Tuesday, Reverb offers up a free track by a local artist so that you can HEAR what’s going on in Colorado’s fertile, freaky music scene. Steal This Track reviews submissions from several acts every week, and then we select the best for you to steal. This week, we’re giving you a sneak preview of Orange peel moses‘s “Pussy Whipped,” which will see its official release tomorrow night.

It’s hard to spend any time in Denver without hearing of George Peele, a.k.a. Orange peel moses. A compulsive performer and self-promoter, Peele can be found walking on stilts, performing bizarre singing telegrams, dancing, DJing, blogging, singing and generally making a spectacle of himself all over town. His antics have even drawn the attention of the casting directors of “America’s Got Talent,” for whom he recently auditioned in Dallas.

In past years, Peele’s musical identity has been subsumed in Friends in Stereo, a collaboration with producers Satori-C (a.k.a Colin Chapman) and PJ Stroller (a.k.a. Reggie Lafaye). Don’t let the solo identity fool you, though. Peele’s latest track was produced by those same old collaborators, co-written with Mike Binder of Current Productions, and includes guitar contributions from Vance Hatfield and Sammy Taggett, as well as a rap from California MC Deadlip.

“Pussy Whipped” is the tongue-in-cheek plea of a willingly submissive lover who wants nothing more than to fall at the feet of his object of desire. With an infectious melody, groovy beat and plenty of double entendres, Orange peel moses paints a catchy sonic portrait that could be the electro update of “Venus in Furs.” His eagerness matched only by his randiness, the performer’s lyrics stretch from the sincere to the ridiculous with an incongruous-yet-believable swagger. A lesser performer might not be able to pull off the odd combination of Lothario and Severin, but Peele has the melodramatic chops to make it work. It also works because you’ve been there. You know what he’s talking about.

Orange peel moses’s digital EP, “Pussy Whipped,” will be released through Beatport and Velcro City Records, the electronic label founded by Denver DJs Vanish and Hero. In addition to the version above, the EP will include remixes by DJs Ishe, Adam Areté and Kaution, Greg Campbell and more. Look for at least some of those folks to throw down some DJ sets at the release party at Andrew’s on Lincoln. The free fiesta starts at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Be there or be whipped.
