News: Denver's Meese dropped by Atlantic, but working on new material

Patrick Meese, seen here fronting his band Meese at the Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks in 2007, is no longer linked to Atlantic Records. The label dropped Meese in December. Photo by John Moore, The Denver Post.
The scuttlebutt/gossip making its way around Denver’s streets – that local pop act Meese had been dropped by Atlantic Records after only one record, last year’s “Broadcast” – is true, The Denver Post has learned.
“We are no longer on Atlantic Records,” guitarist Nate Meese told The Post on [...]

There’s nothing wrong with a little strip tease. Even better: A lot of strip tease.
Black Box Burlesque brought its surly extravaganza “Cora Vette’s Dangerous Curves” to a close on Thursday, and the Bender’s Tavern show featured Reyna Von Vette as the titular Cora and Michelle Baldwin as her burlesque alter ago, Vivienne VaVoom.

The Mile High Makeout: Adventure Records invests in local music

“Cuvée 6″ is the latest release from Boulder-based Adventure Records. Art by Sarah McLaughlin.

Reports of the death of idealism in the music world are greatly exaggerated. Sure, there are signs that Lucifer is hard at work (e.g. the Ticketmaster/Live Nation merger, the return of cassette tapes, Miley Cyrus), but there are even more signs that something good is happening here, even if what it is ain’t exactly clear.
Plenty of musicians and music lovers are sidestepping the rotten, necrotic music business and finding new ways to [...]

Live review: Scott H. Biram @ Bender's Tavern

Ornery songwriter Scott H. Biram didn’t hold back in any way at his Tuesday night Bender’s Tavern show. Photo from MySpace.com.
The loosely packed crowd at Bender’s Tavern on Tuesday killed time before the show by watching Olympics highlights and groaning over the green comedy performances at open mic. Despite these distractions, it wasn’t hard to spot the dog-eared Scott H. Biram in a shopworn trucker hat double fisting it at the bar.

News: Reunited Sublime to swing through Denver and 5 other cities

Remember these party dudes? They’re hoping you do.
The halcyon days of Sublime’s original incarnation with late singer Bradley Nowell are long gone, but the surviving members are hoping fans will embrace new front man Rome Ramirez when the band (now officially known as Sublime with Rome) tours in April and May — including an April 26 date at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium.
Drummer Bud Gaugh and bass player Eric Wilson of the influential Long Beach, Calif., ska-punk act had wrangled in recent months with Nowell’s family and [...]

News: The Eagles fly back to the Pepsi Center

From l-r: Joe Walsh, Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Timothy B. Schmit will hit up Denver as part of their “Long Road Out of Eden” tour this spring.
The Eagles announced minutes ago that their “Long Road Out of Eden” tour will stop by the Pepsi Center on May 20 — and it’s a good bet they’ll sound leagues better than when they played the inaugural concert at Invesco Field at Mile High in 2001, when acoustic issues had some of the 54,000 in attendance demanding [...]

Photo essay: Epica @ the Bluebird Theater

A surprisingly co-ed fanbase greeted Dutch band Epica at the Bluebird Theater on Monday. Photo by Alan Cox.
Dutch goth metal band Epica brought their traditional “Beauty and the Beast” symphonic sound to Denver’s Bluebird Theater on Monday night, much to the delight of a surprising male/female mix of fans mostly dressed in the standard issue black concert T-shirt.
If unfamiliar with the band, imagine a dark, bombastic European sound tinged with operatic female vocals from an attractive, leather-clad front woman and occasional guest vocals by “Sesame [...]

Denver delight DeVotchKa, seen here playing a two-hour Valentine’s Day set at the Fox Theatre a few weeks ago, is back in Arizona’s Wavelab studio working on its follow-up to “A Mad and Faithful Telling.” Photo by Joe McCabe.
Fans lucky enough to score tickets to DeVotchKa’s Valentine’s Day show at Boulder’s Fox Theatre got a treat, whether they realized it or not. At the show, the Denver band played two songs from its forthcoming record, which the group is currently recording at Tucson’s beloved Wavelab [...]
