Steal This Track, Holiday Bonus Edition: Jon Evans and John Common

Normally, Steal This Track is a place to download one song from a local artist, absolutely free, every Tuesday. This week, however, thanks to the generosity of a couple of local musicians, we’re giving you more. Almost no one gets a Christmas bonus anymore, but our lucky readers do! Read on for free tracks from Jon Evans and John Common.
The spirit of the holiday season moves people to do funny things. Some people write painfully detailed reviews of the year in root canals, bar mitzvahs and layoffs. Others throw out all their back issues of “Rolling Stone” and commit to a tidier lifestyle in the coming year. Musicians, it seems, give stuff away, and when that stuff is their music, we all win!
Jon Evans, a Denver area multi-instrumentalist who currently plays with Action Packed Thrill Ride and Achille Lauro, is one such musician. With little fanfare, and a desire to simply share some music, Evans has posted an EP of holiday music for free download on the Hot Congress website.
The EP, which Evans recorded himself in 2008, includes some bizarre, jarring and truly original reinterpretations of holiday classics. Originally, the musician made 30 copies of the EP to give to friends as an inexpensive gift. When Crawford Philleo of Vitamins then suggested posting it on the Hot Congress site, Evans — who has never formally released any solo material — didn’t even have a copy. He had to dig one up, and was so inspired by it that he’s trying to write and record a three-song EP before the end of this week.
Evans’s own unique aesthetic — part Frank Zappa, part Autechre and part elf — gives the EP’s seven tracks a sound that is sure to delight some and confuse others. Best reserved for your most open-minded friends, Evans’s takes on “Christmas Time Is Here” and “White Christmas,” as well as his Nat-King-Cole-turned-inside-out “remix” of “The Christmas Song,” are likely to furrow brows at the office Christmas party cause the grandparents to take the batteries out of their hearing aids on Christmas day. But if you’re looking for a fresh perspective on some well-worn classics, you’ll love this 100 percent FREE EP. Steal it now!
Jon Evans isn’t the only musician generously giving away his music as a Christmas gift to fans. John Common has put together a collection of six of his favorite tracks from his last four albums, called it “Gift,” and posted it for download for the price of an email address, through New Year’s Eve. It’s a tasty (and generous) appetizer for those eager to hear Common’s latest album, which is scheduled for a Jan. 16 release. Steal it now!
Enjoy these little holiday presents, from Steal This Track (and Jon Evans and John Common) to you. If you’re really strapped for cash, you can even re-gift them! Happy holidays!
