Live review: Cage the Elephant @ the Bluebird Theater

[insertReverbPhoto id="78238" photo="3"]
Cage the Elephant still has a ways to go before living up to its promise — not that it didn’t try at its Denver show last week. Photo by Joe McCabe.
I have a love-hate relationship with all-ages shows. My old, cranky self loves the fact that I can usually be home and in bed by midnight when a show is 16+… but my old, cranky self also knows that a 16+ show has the irritating tendency to include a lot of 16- to [...]

Photo essay: Ghostland Observatory @ the Ogden Theatre

Poor vision? Never fear: Ghostland Observatory will help you see the way. Photo by Robert Castro.
Austin, Texas duo Ghostland Observatory served up their electro-rock sound to a sold-out Ogden Theatre last Thursday night. Those in attendance with poor vision were treated to a laser show that may have actually improved their vision. Cranking out hits from their short, three-album catalog, they even managed to include a cover of “Darling Nikki” by Prince. – Robert Castro

Live review: Pixies @ the Fillmore Auditorium (Day 1)

[insertReverbPhoto id="78564" photo="2"]
Denver was back in Black, as in Black Francis and Pixies, on Monday night. A second show is scheduled for tonight. Photo by Joe McCabe.
If you were a young adult anywhere near the “alternative” music scene in 1989 when the Pixies’ “Doolittle” album was originally released, you remember its buzz. This was no “ordinary” record, and it came from a decidedly un-“ordinary” band, at least for their time. Its significance has more than survived the test of time, which is exactly why the [...]

Steal This Track: Jason Cain and Brittany Gould

This is a placeholder image

Steal This Track is THE spot to find out more about Denver’s hottest and most interesting musical acts. More than just a bunch of jittering pixels, this column also gives you the chance to actually HEAR those artists.
Thanks to the depth to which our tentacles reach in the Colorado music scene, we’re able to bring you absolutely legal, absolutely free downloads every Tuesday.
In many cases, Steal This Track might even be the first time a recording has seen daylight, and such is the case with [...]

Live review: Houses @ the Larimer Lounge

[insertReverbPhoto id="78429" photo="16"]
Houses have fallen into an autumnal groove with their latest seasonal EP, “Fall.” Photo by Brian Carney.
At a time when it seems another great local band is saying goodbye every other week, it was refreshing on Saturday to enjoy three that are going one direction only — forward.
Action Packed Thrill Ride and red-hot the Knew (or, as I like to call them, Slim Cessna’s Little Brethren) gathered at the Larimer Lounge to help Houses celebrate the release of the band’s third EP. If [...]

Live review: GWAR @ the Gothic Theatre

[insertReverbPhoto id="77815" photo="7"]
Meet your doom, human. Photo by Mateo Leyba.
From the crack-crazed depths of outer space, lodged unwillingly on this feeble spheroid we pitiful humans call “Earth,” came GWAR — Oderus Urungus, Flattus Maximus, Beefcake the Mighty, JiZMak Da Gusha, and Balsac the Jaws of Death — unto the stage of the Gothic Theatre on Wednesday night.

Live review: Stryper @ Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom

[insertReverbPhoto id="77810" photo="16"]
Mini-Bibles and onstage shout-outs to J.C.? It must be a Stryper show. Photo by Alan Cox.
As part of their 25th anniversary tour, Christian metal band Stryper brought their trademark yellow- and black-striped wardrobe and gear, along with a lot of big hair and MTV ’80s memories to a couple hundred souls gathered at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on Tuesday.

The “Deadliest Catch” tour featured an array of stellar MCs at the Fox Theatre on Wednesday. Photo by Joshua Elioseff.
Boulder’s Fox Theatre, always a friendly place for quality hip-hop, hosted The “Deadliest Catch” tour on Wednesday, featuring hip-hop heavies Mr. Lif, Willie Evans Jr., Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab and former Jurassic 5 member Chali 2na (with a live band). The all-ages show was packed with smiling faces, intelligent lyrics and solid beats from start to finish. Check out Reverb contributing photographer Joshua [...]

The Mile High Makeout: Freedom of Choice

The Mile High Makeout: Freedom of Choice

Q: Are we not fans? A: We most certainly are!
You’ll have to forgive me for being a little distracted this week. You see, I’m on a sort of pilgrimage. This particular pilgrimage hasn’t taken me to Mecca, Jerusalem or Salt Lake City. And it’s unlikely to end in my conversion to Zoroastrianism, Jainism or football. It is quite likely, however, to include energy domes and yellow jumpsuits.
This pilgrimage is based on a childhood crush that transformed into an obsession, and then matured into quivering [...]

Live review: Neon Indian, Tigercity @ the Larimer Lounge

[insertReverbPhoto id="77629" photo="6"]
Despite a relatively reserved crowd, Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and his band delivered a breathless set of lo-fi electro-pop at the Larimer on Tuesday. Photo by Joe McCabe.
The line between good nostalgia and bad nostalgia can sometimes be blurry. Tuesday night at the Larimer Lounge was not one of those times. While the headliner had clearly cultivated and manipulated Reagan-era post-disco influences toward a new artistic and creative vision, opener Tigercity was happy simply being those influences. Their set played out like a [...]
