Live review: Dinosaur Jr. @ the Boulder Theater

[insertReverbPhoto id="75400" photo="2"]
J. Mascis stands among his Marshall stacks during a rote yet solid performance at the Boulder Theater Thursday night. Photos by Joe McCabe.
Fourteen songs, fourteen long-ass guitar solos, thirteen in-between noodle sessions. Two encores, two more long-ass guitar solos, one more in-between noodle session. By the end of Dinosaur Jr.’s set at the Boulder Theater last night, I was just about as bored as J. Mascis looked for the whole show. Make no mistake, the guy shredded his Fender Strat Jazzmaster. For almost [...]

Photo essay: Needtobreathe @ the Bluebird Theater

[insertReverbPhoto id="75259" photo="23"]
Pop-rockers Needtobreathe have been filling bigger and bigger venues lately, and the Bluebird was no exception on Tuesday. Photos by Brian Carney.
Lead by South Carolina brothers Bear and Bryant “Bo” Rinehart, Needtobreathe stopped by the Bluebird Theater on Tuesday night for some pre-snowstorm pop-rock. The band has been around for a decade but only releasing albums since 2006. Lately, their live crowds have been swelling exponentially, as evidenced by their Bluebird Theater set.

Rob Thomas, who rose to fame as the singer of Matchbox Twenty, played Magness Arena with Colorado’s own OneRepublic on Tuesday. Photos by Jennifer Cohen.
Rob Thomas, enveloped in dark, form-fitting blue jeans, along with his entourage of musicians and back-up singers, took the stage at Magness Arena on Tuesday night for a solid two-hour performance. Best known as the singer/songwriter for Matchbox Twenty, Thomas continues to flourish in his solo career, topping the charts with the song “Her Diamonds.”

Live review: Joan Osborne @ the Fox Theatre

[insertReverbPhoto id="75271" photo="1"]
Joan Osborne and her band warmed up the weather-bitten crowd at Boulder’s Fox Theatre on Wednesday. Photos by Joshua Elioseff.
Driving up to Boulder on Tuesday night for the Joan Osborne show at the Fox as the blizzard began and I stared into the hypnotic “Star Trek” warp-like snow through my windshield, I reflected that I might be too dedicated, too crazy or just too eager to hear Joan again. Despite the snow, staying home in Denver never really occurred to me.

Photo essay: Hello Kavita, Houses @ the Hi-Dive

Among Denver’s many folk-rock acts, Hello Kavita has always been one of the most consistent and, at times, tantalizingly transcendent. The group, led by Corey Teruya, is stronger than ever, as they proved at their Hi-Dive show last Friday to celebrate the release of “To a Loved One,” with openers Houses (who will release their own new EP next month).

Live wrap-up: Denver bands at the 2009 CMJ Music Marathon

The crowds at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York embraced a small but hearty contingent of Denver bands. Photo by John Hendrickson.
Here’s a handy wrap-up of our CMJ coverage from Reverb correspondent John Hendrickson, in case you missed it:
If they can make it here, they can make it anywhere.
Over 1,300 artists descended upon New York City last week for the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival, a five-day sprint of conferences, panels, exhibits, screenings and music showcases. Four of these bands call Denver [...]

Live review: e-town with Moby, Nellie McKay @ the Boulder Theater

[insertReverbPhoto id="74610" photo="12"]
Boulder’s e-town radio show welcomed Moby at its Sunday session. Photos by Nathan Rist.
If you’re going to be a rock star, or maintain any significant celebrity status in the world today, an agenda seems to be a de facto requirement. Political, spiritual or otherwise, it’s obvious that the masses look to these heroes for direction, hope and, way too often, a sort of worship. In that light, it was refreshing to spend some fairly intimate time (along with some 850 other people) in [...]

Live review: Loggins and Messina @ the Paramount Theatre

[insertReverbPhoto id="74784" photo="1"]
A scruffy Kenny Loggins and coiffed Jim Messina played faithful renditions of their ’70s hits as a duo at the Paramount Sunday. Photos by Mark Olser.
Reunion tours often feel like a last gasp for money. Even when that may not be the case, there is a strange, almost self-congratulatory vibe emanating from the stage. So it was Sunday night, when Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina played at Denver’s Paramount Theatre. The two had a string of hits in the ’70s and were clearly [...]
