Always a reliable live performer, Trevor Hall and his band have lately honed their live show even more. Photos and text by Lewis Cooper.

Trevor Hall came to Boulder’s Fox Theatre on Aug. 15 to demonstrate just how complete a power trio can be, with Chris Steele on drums, Mario Pagliarulo on bass and Trevor doing his thing — that mindful and passionate singing thing. This trio has come into their own in the last year together, creating their own genre by blending reggae, folk, jazz, trance and rock into one big feast.

They may be one of the hardest working bands touring today. Traveling to a new venue every night, usually in a different state, they are making their way back to their home base of California for their CD release party.

Several years ago Trevor refused to play the usual record industry games and was dropped by Geffen Records after making a song that landed on the soundtrack to “Shrek the Third.” When I spoke with him about being dropped he simply said: “It’s all God’s will, everything will be fine.” And indeed, everything is.

The best music almost always takes you to a higher place, even more so when you really experience it first person, and Hall’s is no exception. But there’s something special about his shows; when you leave the show you find yourself floating a bit, you know that great feeling you get when you are filled with gratitude and it humbles you, and you slow down, come to the present and you find a smile on your face. – Trevor Hall
