Inside of a one room warehouse, Denver band Meese took the stage to an eagerly awaiting crowd. They made a gutsy move Friday night by playing their newly recorded album in track order. It was a worthy experience for their fans who have been anticipating the release of their first full-length on Atlantic Records, whom they signed with in October of 2007.
This was the first time Meese played the Atlas Theater, which [...]

Cradle of Filth @ the Gothic Theatre

Cradle of Filth @ the Gothic Theatre

Cradle of Filth clearly has the potential to be your grandaparents’ favorite band. Photos by Joe McCabe.
U.K. metal act Cradle of Filth and Norwegian black metal band Satyricon brought the hard rock back to the Gothic Theatre on Wed., Jan. 28 with a brutal, blistering set of tunes aimed at their hardcore fans in the States. Black and white face paint and metal spikes were everywhere as the fans pumped their fists into the air.
Better than a quiet night at home? You bet your bloody [...]

moe. @ the Fillmore Auditorium

moe. @ the Fillmore Auditorium

It took them a few songs, but moe. eventually found their groove at the Fillmore on Friday. Photo from moe.org.
It’s always nice when a band can surpass your expectations, or, as was the case with moe.’s show Friday night at the Fillmore, set new ones. I went to the show with no real familiarity with the band, except that I knew I had a) seen them before b) their name came from a song called “Five Guys Named Moe” and c) that Al Schnier and [...]

Meat Puppets @ the Bluebird Theater

Meat Puppets @ the Bluebird Theater

Sounding like they never left in the first place, classic SST band the Meat Puppets rocked the Bluebird Theater on Jan. 24. Photos by Joe McCabe.
It’s been a while since we last heard from the Meat Puppets, but as it turns out, the old SST Records band is still around and kicking out the country-punk tunes with a surprising sense of energy and relevance. The band returned to the Bluebird Theater last week to prove that they still have a few songs left in them [...]

The Ettes @ the Larimer Lounge

The Ettes @ the Larimer Lounge

The Ettes live show at the Larimer Lounge last Thursday failed to live up to even their recordings. Photo from NylonMag.com.
Last Thursday, L.A.-formed nouveau-garage band the Ettes played the Larimer Lounge (check out John Wenzel’s Q&A with them right here). After local openers Ghost Buffalo finished their always-high-energy set the crowd thinned out and the Ettes took the stage to a half-full room of enthusiastic onlookers.
At this point in the review I would like to clear the air about something I feel is a [...]

North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue @ the Fox Theatre

North Mississippi Allstars, Hill Country Revue @ the Fox Theatre

North Mississippi Allstars and Hill Country Revue flattened the crowd at the Fox last Thursday with a 3+ hour set. Photos by Brian Carney.
I’m not generally a fan of the jam band genre — I tend to get bored pretty quickly, probably due to my quick, loud and abrasive punk rock roots. But I have to say that, if any one band was going to be able to win me over, it’s likely North Mississippi Allstars. Their show last Thursday night at the Fox Theatre [...]

This is the first in an occasional series of out-of-town reviews of Colorado musicians.

I’ve never left a DeVotchKa show without breaking even the tiniest of sweat — sometimes leaving drenched if I happened to be in the front. But last week’s show at Webster Hall in New York City came and went without a drop of perspiration. Don’t get me wrong. The show was fantastic, [...]

Tommie Sunshine @ Beta Nightclub

Tommie Sunshine @ Beta Nightclub

Tommie Sunshine brought some light into the otherwise creepy part of LoDo in which Beta is situated. Photo from dimmak.com.
Entering Beta for Tommie Sunshine’s set on Friday night felt like a time warp. The cushy club that sits on the edge of the slimiest, creepiest section of LoDo is a diamond in the skeezy, generic one-word bar rough, a multi-level danceteria with a superior sound system and a friendly, open layout. It reminded me of the old Tracks 2000, minus the padded walls of the [...]
