wow - caught this kind of late. I will say that when I found the review online I was excited (because I was there and wanted to read about what I experienced). When I started reading I was really bummed about how the show was covered. While filling a room is great for any band, I echo Kurt in that some of the coolest, nicest and most supportive folks in the music community were at this show. It was probably the most fun I have had out at a local show in a year or more. All the acts were fantastic - and did their OWN thing. Next time, instead of spending the evening counting people in the audience and basing a band's performance on how many people may have walked away briefly to grab a beer or visit the restroom - listen to the music more closely. Talk to some of the folks in the audience. Ask them what they like about the music. Ask them why they came. Talk to the bands that are actually playing. I thank the Overcasters for doing what they do for all of the right reasons - and for putting together a fantastic evening of wonderful music and great people. There is a reason "we celebrate ourselves." It's not because we can keep a room "half-filled" with the help of KC and the Sunshine Band. It's because we are doing something we love because we love it.

Kurt,

Thanks for clarifying your comment via email. It's clear now that you weren't trying to disparage writers and photographers, especially given who your roommate is. I saw Overcasters at the Westword Showcase, and they are definitely worth checking out.

Doug, I wish I would have spotted your comment a few hours ago, but I just got home. No big deal to me, but I know for sure that Kurt did not mean anything critical about my pictures. In fact, he messaged me on myspace shortly after the review went up and complimented and thanked me for the shots.

I think he did a great job speaking for himself, but I think he was reacting to the subjectivity of reviews in general, and lumped in "pictures, good or bad" in that sentence to make a point. I see how you could easily read it in a negative way, though, especially without knowing our past correspondence. A respected photographer jumping to my defense, though? That rocks.

In reference to the ongoing comments/responses, all I can say is that I there's a reason I take the pictures and prefer not to touch the pen and paper. As hard as Billy and others arguably do or don't try, they could never be completely objective in their reviews unless they just threw up a headcount and a time-stamped set list with correct spelling. There is an inherent subjectivity to what they do, to at least make the review somewhat interesting by telling the reader all about the show, and a little of what the band is all about. And of course, the musicians and artists may have intended something totally different, and then comments flare. See above.

I think our photography, on the other hand, is pretty objective to begin with. You and I primarily face technical challenges in capturing the night for the reader. Like you said, though, we have to come up with some interesting shots, and that's where our subjectivity comes in. But our subjectivity rarely make the bands think that we pissed all over what they did. We have that going for us, and I sure don't envy what Billy and the other writers have to do. And I don't envy musicians and their constant struggle to convey their vision, either.

Personal note to Doug: That lighting is ridiculous. I have no idea where all the green came from, and decided to just run with it. I breathed a sigh of relief when Overcasters started their light show.

Great pictures, Jason. I know what it takes to get good pictures at that venue, and unlike what Kurt thinks, it’s not true that “anybody can take pictures good or bad.” Yes, anybody can take BAD pictures, but it takes a lot of skill and artistic talent to go into a very low-light room and get interesting, different, and technically sound photos of what is basically a monotonous small club mis en scène. Maybe next time you should run your blurry cell phone pictures instead, and save the good equipment for a different band who might appreciate your talents.

Wow. Well said, K. By the way, you have nothing to "live down". You have been in 2 really successful bands. Something most of the "players" in this city have not. Maybe you should have surgery on your vocal chords or something. That way, there will be no association with TW. Of course, this is a ridiculous premise. Somehow, the attack sounds personal to me. Just keep doing what you're doing. It works

Well well, big surprise. It is Denver after all. People seem to need to compare everything to something that has already happened. We all grow tired of repetition and the same old thing therefore we try to grow and challenge ourselves in life. We are born with one voice, one set of vocal chords and a certain amount of learned musical intellect. I have lived my adult life in Denver proper and have always tried to put on soul stirring musical events. I have not spent one week of that time without hearing some person mentioning the words Twice Wilted. Which leads me to believe we did something right. In fact my friends and I have done more for the Denver music scene in the last half an hour than you will ever do in a lifetime. Not trying to be ego maniacal but, if you're going to step up and criticize and degrade the hard work of so many wonderful people it might do you some good to take some time and improve your "anemic" musical vocabulary. I
started TW in 1987 and the band went through so many sound changes and personnel that to compare it to anything past or present is asinine . It saddens me to see so much exclusion, negativity, and just general mean spirited writing and back biting. I don't think that in my entire history of playing music I have ever been around so many good people in one place as there were at our CD release on Nov. 8th. I have never received so many positive emails about ANY event .When we only take the time to peruse an Internet browser for our information it shows. I don't claim to be an expert at much of anything, and I work at the talent to show whats in my heart when I step up on a stage. The over generalization and bias in the above blog/article whatever you want to call it is the pinnacle of one of my pet peeves. Anybody can write a review, anybody can google something, anybody can take pictures good or bad and in most cases, its the people who have worked the
hardest, the musicians that get discounted and misrepresented. From the beginning of time the musician has played for exposure, beverages, and for what? one person with no credentials to urinate all over something that means a great deal to so many people.Your writing is just like most of the world ,take imagination and hope and turn it into a quagmire of quantification. But what should I expect...people can only see what is in front of them. The ONLY thing Overcasters are guilty of is having me as a singer their hearts break too and I guess they have no minds of their own and are just simple robots doing my bidding. I am in love with Erin Tidwell and I am happy...sorry folks..I am no longer the downtown harbinger of personal self-destruction and despair. I am simply following my musical heart there is no intention of Twice Wilted mach 2. That's impossible and if you ever caught the band you already know that. It would be cool to live my life without
constantly trying to live down my past. Even though it was great... could we move on now? With an astounding amount of love in my heart for every musician I have ever shared the stage with, played music with, mixed sound for, or just shared a flickering loyalty with. Maybe before I shake off this mortal coil I'll have the chance to shake your hand, look you in the eye. And then, maybe you can feel what I'm about.
Best,

there was no crowd? Were you at the same show I was at? If anybody reading this thinks that any of the bands that played that night sounded the same I encourage you to go see these bands live and take a look at their myspace pages. Sounds to me like this guy walked into the venue with the intention of f*cking up a perfectly great night. Moron.
