“Great Big Sea is a bastard,” the band’s website proclaims before going on to explain that the Canadian act is the progeny of a couple defunct groups from the frozen north. Certainly, the band’s high-energy performances (imagine sea shanties and barroom songs on steroids) implies the band has something to prove.

Of course, after 15 years of rockin’ the Celtic stuff Great Big Sea has developed a loyal fanbase to support its prolific touring. Reverb photographer Mark T. Olser stopped by the band’s show at the Paramount Theatre on Thursday for this colorful photo essay.

    Your photos really helped to capture some of the energy that is a Great Big Sea show. Thanks for giving me a glimpse of one I could not attend. They put on a very high energy show, don’t they?

    Mark – you got some good shots. Too bad security pulled you out of the prime spot! None the less, you really captured the engergy of a GBS show – I love the last shot, and the one that is just hands clapping. In #9 you got me and my family front and center having a wonderful time at the show! Oh yeah, and you got some great ones of the guys too! ;-)
    The Fortunate Tour, to promote the band’s 9th album “Fortune’s Favour”, continues through 2009 in the US and Canada. Alan Doyle, frontman of Great Big Sea announced Sunday that they might be back again in Denver in the early part of the new year! :)
