SoCo Music Experience @ Coors Field

Gnarls Barkley singer Cee-Lo ushered the crowd into the night at the SoCo Music Experience. Photos by Laurie Scavo.
The SoCo Music Experience, a free, booze-sponsored tour that stopped by the north parking lot at Coors Field on Saturday, showcased an array of local and national acts on a pair of stages, from Denver bands the Swayback, Hot IQs, and Laylights to nationals Bassnectar, Dead Confederate, Blonde Redhead and Gnarls Barkley.
Reverb contributing photographer Laurie Scavo was there fighting through the crowds and distractions to snap away [...]

Achille Lauro @ the Larimer Lounge

Taking the stage with decidedly aquatic-themed homemade costumes, Denver band Achile Lauro played the Larimer Lounge on Friday to celebrate the release of their new (and first full-length) CD, with help from Widowers and Mothership.
The show was not, as rumored, the band’s last, but rather the last one for a month while its members take a break and tend to jobs, “sleep and reflection,” according to a MySpace blog. Reverb contributing photographer Brian Carney was there to catch all the action. Check out his photo [...]

Live review: Widespread Panic @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre (June 27, 2008)

There’s a reason Widespread Panic has played Red Rocks 32 times. Can you guess what it is? Photos by Mark T. Osler.
Friday, June 27, was “Widespread Panic Day” in the City and County of Denver. So what did the Athens, Ga.-based band jam band do to get such an honor? After three sold-out shows this weekend at Red Rocks, the band will have played 32 sold-out concerts at Red Rocks, more than any other in the venue’s history.
The six-piece group has achieved this while largely [...]

Jill Sobule @ Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret

’90s one-hit wonder? No way. Jill Sobule proved she has a lot left to say at Lannie’s on Friday. Photo from TedBlog.com.
Girls kissing girls is totally tame now. And rightfully so. But when former Denverite Jill Sobule, best known for her controversial 1995 hit “I Kissed a Girl,” emerged from the red curtains at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret on Friday, it was hard to know whether to expect a washed-up one-hit wonder or a still-viable singer.
The crowd was definitely into AARP territory and all seemed to [...]

Wolf Eyes @ the Hi-Dive

If you’ve got hearing frequencies to spare, catch Wolf Eyes the next time they tear into Denver. Photo from ShowClix.com.
The sounds at the Hi-Dive on Tuesday night were the aural equivalent of a war zone. Static explosions seeped out from every corner. Nothing was safe. Often, an important question arose: Is that the band making that noise or the sound of my ears dying? The answer: It’s alright. I wasn’t using those frequencies anyway.
Epileptinomicon kicked off the night with an at least semi-thought-out stage show. [...]

The Explorers Club @ the Lion's Lair

Wait… what year is it? The Explorers Club made it difficult to be sure. Photos and text by John Moore.
Yes, there’s beach in South Carolina, too — proving you don’t have to be from Southern California to replicate that sweet signature sound of the Beach Boys. I had been tipped off that a visit to an Explorers Club show was about as close any of us born after 1960 will ever get to experiencing the old Boys in their early live prime. I had to [...]

Live review: Rush @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Live review: Rush @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Rush @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Reinforcing their reputation for instrumental virtuosity, Rush played both classics and new tunes at Red Rocks on Wednesday. Photos by John Leyba.
Looking around at the crowd at Red Rocks Wednesday night, it was surprising to see so many young faces eager to hear Rush play. The audience ran the gamut from pre-teens to people in their retirement years. That begs the question, “Is Rush ageless?”
For 34 years now, the Canadian power trio has been doing their own thing, ignoring critics, spurning radio hits, and building [...]

Mark Knopfler @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre

No Dire Straits? No problem — at least not for guitar hero Mark Knopfler. Photos by Brian Carney.
Mark Knopfler is widely considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Despite this, he hasn’t had many hits as a solo artist, so who would have thought he could pack Red Rocks to near capacity on Tuesday night? The place was teeming with hippies, guitar nerds, baby boomers in party shirts and suburbanites of all stripes. If they were all there to see him [...]

Loudon Wainwright, Richard Thompson @ Chautauqua Auditorium

Loudon Wainwright tried to entice the mellow crowd at Chautauqua Auditorium on Wednesday night. Photo from MLive.com.
For some, he’s father to Rufus and Martha. For others, he’s the lonely dad who followed his kid to college in the underrated sitcom, “Undeclared.”
For most, yes, he’s Katherine Heigl’s gynecologist in “Knocked Up.”
For not enough, Loudon Wainwright is one of the most acerbic singer-songwriters of the past 40 years. And on Wednesday at the Chautauqua Auditorium (Barn!), he was funnier than most stand-up comedians. The old man (hey, [...]
