Cat-A-Tac @ the Bluebird Theater

I had originally planned to review the solid all-local lineup at the Bluebird Theater on Saturday, which included Cat-A-Tac, Widowers, Light Travels Faster and 3 Cheers Faraday. Alas, some out-of-town friends, early Kentucky Derby mint juleps and general overindulgence rendered my party, er, relatively out of commission that evening. Lucky for us, frequent Reverb contributor Doug Beam was there to catch the two sterling headliners with his lens.
If you haven’t seen [...]

Dark Meat @ the Hi-Dive

Multiply this by 12 and get out of the freakin’ way. Photos by Doug Beam.
Dark meat or white meat? The inevitable choice one has to make at Thanksgiving in some ways defines the type of person you are.
If you like white meat, you are a purist, an epicurean who would only choose the most tender of flesh. You have notions of civility, table manners and are deeply fascist. If you are a dark meat-eater you are, of course, an uncultured brute, clutching enormous turkey legs [...]

It’s excellent to have friends in high places.

GZA @ the Bluebird Theater

The GZA’s fans smoked out the Bluebird Theater on Tuesday — literally. Photo of a previous show from Indietastic.
The Bluebird Theater was smokin’ on Tuesday night, and that was only partially due to a skilled and impressive set by the Genius, aka the GZA, from the Wu-Tang Clan.
Around 10:45 p.m., nearly two hours after local openers Umconscious finished warming up the stage, and an hour after GZA was scheduled to go on, this crowd of backpack hip-hop heads milled around the floor, sat along the [...]

The Sword @ the Bluebird Theater

The Sword is indeed mighty, from a massive rhythm section to guitar throw-downs that would make Ozzy himself proud and giddy. Photos by Glory Breitwieser.
You can learn a lot about Austin’s the Sword by listening to their records or visiting their MySpace page. But even then, you’ve never witnessed their true and noble might until you’ve seen this Norse-obsessed band live.
It’s a heavy time, no doubt. I remember seeing this band tour their first record, “Age of Winters.” If I remember correct, they opened a [...]
