Spitting is gross. It doesn’t rock. I was disappointed in this concert, considering the quantity of hype preceding their Denver appearance. I had heard them before online. Solid stuff, but basically nothing I didn’t like better the first around a few decades ago. I came away thinking it was all pretty much Sid Barrett Floyd and mid-period Beatles with new arrangements. However, I tried to project what those songs might be like live, and anticipated something pretty awesome.

Between all the retro-retro, and mic and pedal effects, and goofy moustaches, and haukin’ loogies… it was mostly style over substance for me. Everyone there, including me, knew the antics were all pre-meditated, but it seemed so contrived none-the-less. I think people want their stage antics to come off genuine and spontaneous, whether they are or not. Pete Townsend smashing a guitar. Jimi Hendrix lighting his on fire. Janet Jackson’s “nipplegate”. Ok, maybe not the last one. When the Black Lips have ascended to the level of musical importance of the Who or Jimi Hendrix, I will either forgive or enjoy their antics. Until then, I look forward to hearing about them flinging dung at the crowd at SXSW to keep the kids interested.
